Do you have what it takes to be a model?
Find out if pursuing a modeling career is right for you
How do I know if I have what it takes?
To be a professional model, you need a beautiful, striking face, good teeth, good legs, healthy hair, and a nice
smile. Models must also fit sample sizes perfectly. Standard measurements for female models: you must be 5’9” or
taller with a 34” chest, 24” waist, and 34” hips. However, even with perfect measurements, there is no guarantee
that you will find work. For instance, there is no work for petite models under 5’9” in certain areas. Shorter
girls, on the other hand, find good work in Asia, and other American cities have a good petite market as well.
What are the typical male model measurements?
A male model must typically measure 6’ in height with a 40” chest (it should not measure larger than 42”, since
clothes won’t fit correctly otherwise), 32” waist or under, and an inseam of 34”. Your suit size ought to be a
regular or tall coupled with your chest size. If you have a 40” chest, your suit size would be 40R or 40T. Your
shoe size should be between 9 and 12.
Can I find catalog work even though I don’t fit the look of a traditional model?
Although there are opportunities in commercial print that don’t have height requirements, catalog work is often
difficult to get. The clothes must fit perfectly in accordance with the measurements listed above. A catalog is
full of models all with perfect measurements, an excellent agent, and a portfolio full of work experience.
Unfortunately, catalogs tend to book the same models consistently season after season, so there are not many
chances to break into catalog modeling.
How can I break into modeling?
Modeling agencies often hold open calls. This is a time each week when a new model can go talk to an agent. If the
agent is interested, you might be asked to join with the agent. If you are serious about modeling, try to see
several modeling agencies before committing to one. An advantage of going to open calls: even if the agent is not
interested in representing you, they will often give you feedback and advice on how to improve your marketability.
Be grateful for any constructive criticism that top agents have to offer.
What are some good tips I should keep in mind when trying to find an agent?
There are only a finite number of great modeling agents in any city. Try to speak with all the top modeling
agencies and stick with the agency that is most interested in you, the one that you feel most comfortable with.
However, if you are unsuccessful in your effort to find an agent, ask yourself why. You may want to ask the agents
for feedback for things you can correct or change. This may come at a considerable expense, as with dental surgery,
for example.
